HONOUR WHERE DUE
AMENDS TO AMUNDSEN
BRITISH SPORTSMANSHIP
LONDON, 23rd December.
The attack made by the explorer, the late Boald Amundsen, on the' English, as being "by and large bad losers," is recalled by efforts now being made to restore his name to the honour list of the Koyal Geographical Society. . / His remarks caused the society to terminate Amundsen's association with. it. Now it is suggested that the society should rescind, that resolution in. recognition of Amundsen's heroism in sacrificing his life in his attempt to rescue the Italian, General Nobile, after the disaster to. the airship Italia. Mr. Howard Whitehouse, chairman of the Anglo-Norwegian. Committee, is arranging for the preservation, of the Polar vessel, Fram, in memory of Nansen, Amundsen, and Sverdrup, all of whom were associated "with, that vessel. ■
The cireumstances> were that Amundsen complained in an American magazine article that the late Lord Curzon had grossly insulted, him at a dinner which the Geographical Society gave in his honour, when he referred to the value Amundsen attached' to dogs in exploration, and added: "Three cheers for the dogs.'-'
Amundsen then wrote the phrase: "The English are bad losers." He added a tribute, to the late Captain Scott, however, as a. "splendid sportsman, as well as a great explorer."
