UNSETTLED CONDITIONS

A moderate depression' has been crossing the Dominion, moving along the southern edge of a slight anticyclone situated to the north. Consequently the winds have been chiefly from between north and west and strong at places in and south of Cook .Strait. The weather has been cloudy and unsettled in the western and I southern districts, with rain in Westland and Otago, a few heavy falls having occurred. The higheßt reported total for the 24 hours up to 9 a.m. today was 352 at Okuru. Westpbrt had 92 points, Arthur ?s Pass 65 points, and Qjueenstown 78 points. The eastern districts have had mainly fair to fine weather, with very warm temperatures, but by 9 a.m. to-day a change to southwest winds had brought showers along the East Coast as far north as Christchurch. '

Auckland had fine weather yesterday, with.light, variable winds. The night was cool. In Wellington a strong, squally north-westerly prevailed, with dull, threatening, conditions at times. The highest gust of wind was one of 56 miles an hour at about 3.48 p.m. It was a. hot, ' north-westerly day at Christchurch. Duuedin. had a' calm, dull day, and light rain fell last night. The forecast is for winds between north-west and south-west, but northerlies prevailing in Cook Strait, moderate to strong generally, later winds becoming more generally northerly. The weather will be unsettled in districts with a westerly aspect and in scattered parts of the eastern districts of the South Island, with some rain and in places thunder, elsewhere ( mainly fair.
