KILLED BY BULL

FOUaHT FOR FIVE HOURS

A VIVID STORY

(From "The Post's" Representative.) SYDNEY, 24th December. Tho story of how he was for five hours tossed and gored by an infuriated bull was told by Charlcg Hector Pearl before he died in the Launccstoft (Tasmania) Hospital. Pearl was on.a fish-ing.-expedition with his wife, and when he did not return to her at 4 o'clock in the afternoon she became anxious, and a search party was organised. It was not" until 9 0 'clock in tho evening that Pearl-was discovered lying between, two logs in' p,n unconscious condition. Pearl had been badly gored by a bull that lia'd been in the paddock through which van tho river in which he had been fishing. It was during a period of con^ sciousness in hospital, just before he died, that Pearl was able to give a vivid description of the attack that was made upon him.

Pearl said that when he was approaching the river bank he passed the bull, which was quietly grazing in the paddock. The bull gave no sign that it resented the presence of anybody. Pearl was sitting on. the hank of the river when suddenly, without any warning, the animal rushed him from behind and threw him over its head. Quickly regaining his foot, Pearl grapple.d with the animal, but ho was agaia knocked down. Pushing him before he had time to icgain his feet, the bull again tossed him. Although .bruised and shaken, Pearl attempted to ward oft' the animal's rushes for nearly an hour and a half, during which time tho bull badly mauled him. While he was on the ground the bull continued to attack Pearl with increasing ferocity, and did so on and off for live hours.

There wero times when tho animal left his victim and went back to continue grazing. Then suddenly it would rush again at its victim until finally it tossed Pearl between two logs, where he was out of reach. It then began to tear up the ground, during which operation Pearl's body was covered, with the earth. He was in that, position when he. was found by the! search party. Pearl said that during the whole, of his terrible experience 'he was soriscious, and was able to remember quite clearly everything that happened. His injuries were such that a complete examination was impracticable. ';'.•"

A tragic, feature of the case was that Pearl,, although" out of sight of tho earin which .his Wifo was sittiug, waiting for. his return, was yet within 'hearing distance, but was unable'to make his wife hear his cries for help, as she is. deaf.
