NAPIER, 4th. January. The tenth round of the Dominion chess championship was played to-day.

Rutherford lost to G. Gundersen. Queen's Gambit declined. Gundersen earlyassumed a commanding position', and-of-fered ;i rook, a sacrifice which was declined. White resigned on the 62nd move. Grierson lost tcrPurdy.- Sicilian. Purdy played.. a. steady; 'game; .and gradually gained the supremacy. , Smith- lost--to- Fairb'urnl French defence^ Fairburn proved, himself the more experienced, player: ■ Severne lost to-Ersk'ine, French. Severne missed a, chance. of -TV-inning' on at> exchange, and later exchanged three pieces for his opponent's' Queen.' Both players were short of time, and Erskine secured a white Queen for a piece. Mate shortly followed.

Gyles beat Kelling. Queen's Gambit declined. Gyles won a pawn; and Kelting got a somewhat cramped, position. He resigned. , . '- Rev. Miller lost to Maddoi." French. Miller captured a pawn early, but a premature attempt to force ' his advantage brought about his downfall.

Scott beat O'Hallorari. ■ Nimzowitch. O'Halloran gained a pawn, and hid a drawn game immediately after the ndjournment, but took the wrong road, and lost "a 'piece, and the game.

Miller lost to Gundcrsen. Queen's Pawn game. Gunderson developed a fierce attack and (finished with an unusual mate. Grierson r- lost to Erskine, who, taking advantage of .an' oversight on Grierson's sixteenth, move, finished with a pretty mate on the twenty-first move.
