Roberts was hit. The wound which Roberts 'received', was of such a nature that he dictl in the street within a few minutes. His assailant nonchalantly twirled his revolver as a constable approached him, saying, "Here you are. ; have a licence." Then he added, "Take me away," and with a crowd of several thousands striving to obtain a glimpse of him he was placed in a motor-ear and hurried off to a police station. Apparently the men'met by accident, and' only a few words passed between them before Roberts drew a vevolvev and fired at point-blank range. The other man replied by drawing his gun and shots followed one another in: quick succession.. Kqberts backed from the footpath, his eyes on his enemy, and he tired again as he retreated across the busy road. One of the bullets shattered the window, of: a.fashion shop. Ducking behind a pole to which a rubbish bin was attached, the otb^r man returned the lire. . His revolver appeared to jam and, frantically twisting the cylinder, he stepped from behind the pole and made after Roberts. Reaching the roadway, he. fired again, and Roberts fell with a groan., A. constable, bis. revolver drawn, rushed to the scene. When the last shot in the duel was fired there; was scarcely anybody to be seen, but when the firing ceased thousands flocked to the scene, and the police; bad the utmost , difficulty in. keeping back, the crowd from the fatally wounded man.
