CHURCHILL STORY

A tale is told by the Rev. Edgar Stpgdon of the far-off days when Mr. Winston Churchill' was a Harrow boy. He says:—When" Mr. Church ill. first came to the school-we elder boys were amazed that he broke every schoolboy ordinance with success. Boys at that time were very nervous about being seen walking with a lady in the street. If your mother wrote to ask. if she could come down to see you, you told her what hat to wear, and if her figure was beyond the accepted standard you suggested postponement, and, above all, there, should be no form of endearment. Mr. Churchill invited his old nurse, down for a day at Harrow, to her intense happiness; she arrived in an old poke bonnet; her figure had attained ample proportions; and Mr. Churchill walked arm-in-arm with her in_ the streets. It is about the nicest thing a Harrow boy has ever done. It is evident that in his earliest years Winston was endowed with the same moral courage that we have grown to look for in his. later years (comments Autolycus" in the "Sunday Times").
