CHRISTMAS MAILS

AT. CHIEF POST OFFICE

SLIGHT DECREASE

The ZStew Zealand mail matter handled at the Chief Post Office, Wellington during the period from loth December to 24th December showed a slight falling off this year as compared with the similar period of last year. On the other hand, the inward overseas mails showed an increase. The telegraph work was very heavy, especially on 24th December. Additional operators were employed,-and after working for from twelve to fourteen hours on Christmas Eve they finished their task at 3 a.m. on Christmas Day. No doubt the reduction in the charge for Christmas greeting telegrams was a factor in the increased number'of messages dispatched. The two busiest days in the Post Office were the 22nd and 23rd December. On the former day^ in addition to the heavy local postings, no fewer than 3000 bags of mail matter arrived by the Bangitane from London and the Ulimaroa from Sydney. During the nine days from the loth to 24th December the number of mail bags sent from Wellington to other parts of the Dominion and received in Wellington was as follows (the number for the similar period of the previous year being given in parentheses): Outward, 9763 (10,408); inward, 6607 (7431); in transit (that is, bags arriving in "Wellington but not opened). 3720 (3994); parcel hampers, outward 4879 (7352), inward 1559 (3352); in transit, 1601 (3075). OVERSEAS MAILS. The outward Christmas mails closed in November for the United Kingdom and Europe, and those for Australia closed about the middle of December. Tho number of bags sent from "Wellington was 1226 (1387); inward, 2869 (2731); in transit, 609 (555): outward, 3144 (3048). The telegrams sent from the Wellino--ton office on the 24th December numbered 7894, as compared with 9746 sent on the same day in th© previous year. The telegrams received were 9144. as compared with 11,038. Telegrams received in Wellington and forwarded to other places numbered 27,732, as compared with 25,732 on 24th December, 1930.
