OBITUARY
IVIR. R. S. ROUNTHWAITE
Well known in the province as a civil engineer, and formerly Cify Engineer at ■Wellington, Mr. Richard Septimn* Eounthwaitt; aied at his residence, 201, Sutherland road, Lyall Bay,'yesterday morning at the age of 77. The lato Mr. Kounthwaite -waa born, in Sunderland, England, "in 1854, and served his articles as a civil engineer with Messrs. Meek and SesYrit, of Sunderland. He acted" a« assistant t»/ Mr. Philip Brannon, civil engineer, of Westminster, and for four years wm attached to the Barrack Branch of the War Office, under Colonel Seddon, BJB. In 1878 he was appointed „ chief draughtsman for the county bptttngh of Sunderland. Six months later he wa» promoted assistant surveyor" and in the following yea* he* "was appointed engineer and surveyor,-which part h« held until 1898. In 1899 r , Mr. Eounthwaite came out to' Now Zealand to take the position of City" Engineer at Wellington. The City'Engineer'a Department m those days, was;i4 Panama street. Hr.
