MUNICIPAL ELECTION

NEW SOUTH WALES RESULTS

SEVERE DEFEAT

United Press Association—By Electric Tclesrapli—Copyrlcht. (Received. 4th January, 9 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. The latest summary of municipal elections results shows that the Lang or State Labour Party has been ; severely defeated. Formerly Labour controlled ten Councils, but now controls only one or two, in which the contest was chiefly between Federal and State Labour. The latter contested four hundred seats, and won about fifty. More than 2000 candidates contested the elections yesterday in 66 municipalities and shires in Cumberland County, comprising the metropolitan area and the adjoining districts. Of tho candidates 400 were Lang Plan advocates and 40 were Communists.

The'vote fot the Communists was very small in all cases, and the Lang men failed badly in many instances. In Kcdfern, where a Labour majority is in control, the election resulted in six Labour and six Progressive candidates being returned.

At Waterloo, where Labour has been in control for the past six years, not a single Lang candidate was returned. Marrickville replaced throo Labour men with non-party candidates, one of the defeated men being a member of the State Transport Trust. Petersham replaced Labour men with Independents. A Lang Plan man won o,ne seat at Drummoyne, but his party failed to get a seat at Waverley. Labour retained control at Newtown, but with one out of twelve in the suburban municipalities tho party had little success.

_ Though the results are- incomplete, it is'clear that where the contest was run on political party lines the Lang Plan candidates have scored in some industrial suburbs.

In Glebe and Paddington it appears that they aro in full control. I v the outer districts, however, they have been badly beaten.
