J Chief Joy was responsible for a- surprise .when he narrowly defeated the favourite, Antique, in the Goodwood Handicap. Chief Joy followed Taurua, Dunraven, and Princess Bede into the straight, and he just struggled home from Antique, who finished fast. Green Linnet, after disputing the issue with Chief Joy to within fifty yards of the post, faded into third place, and Princess Bede was fourth, followed by Catoma, Duhraven, and Royal ■Artist.-,. Beacon Fire, was favourite for the Grey Handicap,: Taut, after leading for over seven furlongs, he was beaten-home by Bronze Tray and Grand Review. Bronze Tray came from a long way back and finished splendidly on the mils. He nearly caused serious trouble when he swerved out on to Beacon Fire about a hundred yards from the post.
