BALL DRESS NICELY
ELLIS VERY CONFIDENT
The Waihenga Handicap, the open geventTurlongs at Tauherenikau on Saturday, was a good thing for the favourite, Ball Dress, whom A.' E. Ellis rode very confidently. It was the first win that this four:year-old full gister .to. Cricket Bat and Semper. Paratus. has had since she scored 'at: -the last .Manawatu Autumn :Me;etin'tf, but She\has been indicating im"prbving'ifornx recently, for she was ..third at "Ashßiirton last month, then,, not raced again tiH-Friday, made a fair showing in the. Wairarapa Cup. She will be remembered, in • Wellington as! the last Douro Cup winner. ■ She was held in reserve in the race for I the.-last;three furlongs. . Ellis got. her away well;-but' she was last before they had gone far. Just beyond the half-mile Ellnf sent her along- the outside, and she was in line with Gay Court and Qratorian as they turned for home. At the distance she'drew ahead, and, comfortably beat Oratorian to the post by three-parts. of a length. Tho effort is worth keeping in mind, as it was at this time last year- that she'canle'into- her best. . . • .'
.. Gratorian went another good race and is improving. He watf never further back than second and finished on. nicely. Gay Court was probably made rather too much use of in the middle stages, then received a bump from1 Oratorian just as they were straightening up. He was probably beaten at the time, but he continued on to finish a creditable fourth. Pahu came well over the closing stages. Arajean was last away and was never a prospect. The class was too good for Eminent. • ;
