TROTS AT ADDINGTGN
ARETHUSA SCORES WELL
TROT TO WHITE SATIN
(By Telegraph.) (Special to "The Evening Post.") CIIKISTCHURCH, 2nd January. , The Canterbury Park Trotting Club's Meeting was concluded-in-bright sunshine. There was a moderate attendance when racing opened, but the crowd increased later, and the totalisator investments were slightly ahead of the first day's figures. The iuvestmpnts totalled £21,407 10s, as against £24,234 on the second day last year. The total for '. the meeting, was £42,090 10sV compared with £51,940 last year. ' - - : WELL-RELATED TROTTER. Great Nelson trotted a fine race in the Progressive Handicap. After jumping out smartly, he was soon in a good position, and his stamina gave him the victory. While he may never reach the highest class, he is very useful, especially up to a mile and a half. He is a brother.to. Great Bingen and Peter Bingen. Deceitful went very solidly, and finished second. She is somewhat erratic, but on this occasion she made no mistakes and stayed on well. Dark MeKinney, after a' bad start, showed the best speed he has exhibited in the Dominion to finish third. He still mixes his gait, but his stamina is undeniable. .. ' NONA BINGEN AGAIN. ' Nona Bingen .followed up her success.oil the first day by winning the Prebbletou Handicap in fast time. As in her earlier' race, she went away well, and stayed on in good style. She is in great form, and she may win at two "miles before long. Ratloc was a trifle slow away, but he paced fast once he hit his gait. He went a fine race for second, arid if he remains sound he should soon be a winuer. Ciro was responsible for a smart effort. He broke at the end of a furlong, but once he. settled down he. showed great speed".' But for the mistake, the three-year-bid would have been hard to beat. ; ARETHUSA'S MAIN RACE. Aiethusa was second to Warplane in the Ashburton Cup. with Red Shadow third; while in the Park Handicap, Arethusa again bi?at. Red Shadow, with Warplane fourth. "Arethusa, now a fbur-year:ofd, is a proved-stayer, like her, brother, Wiackler, and her stamina gave her the' victory," i as she came home very strongly. Red Shadow has-failed to'finish on resolutely in his. last : two races. While'he is a brilliant pacer, he is not yet a solid! stayer.- Later in the day, in' the Selwyn Handicap, he registered a brilliant effort over a mile and a quarter, smothering tho opposition in. the; filial; furlong. Harvest Child, who appears: to.be carrying more condition than usual, paced a great race for third -money. He was in the picturci- ■ ™way' and stayed .-'on well to get third. The West Coast trotter, Olive Nelson, showed a fine tunvof speed: She was m front early, and led a field of good pacers till two furlongs from home, when the speed found her but. It was, however, a good performance for a mare with no race experience among pacers. PROUD DILLON IMPRESSIVELY. Proud Dillon won the Middleton Handicap in impressive style, finishing on. solidly, after; being a long way back in the early stages. He races in. the- interests of -Air. C. Cowsill, who came to the Dominion from. England with Our George; more than a year ago. He returned home recently, and Proud Dillon is how trained by R. Robinson.' Proud Dillon is a very solid stayer, when caught ;right. > Pageant d'Oiand Arachne had a great battle in the race. They were out in front fogether most' of■ the way, but Arachne was well beateuAtwb furlongs froui- home, while Pagearitid'Or'failed ih;the straight. Brentlight ■. paced a sound - race - for second. He was in the picture all through the journey, and he finished1 on well, though he could ■not stall off Proud Dillon in the last fifty yards. He pulled up very sore, and he may need a spell. ' iBACK AMONG TROTTERS. -When White "Satin won the Hornby Handicap she scored her first success since going into W. J. Tomkinson's stable. She was a brilliant young trotter, who did well while trained by R. B. Berry. - When Tomkinson got her she did not trot kindly, and she was worked for a time as a pacer Although she adapted herself to the hopples, she did not lace well, and she was return* ed to the trotting gait. The experience with the pacers ..seems to have benefited her, and in her latest run she was always wing smoothly. Ambition tried to win from end to end, and she failed only iv the last hundred yards. She is deficient iv. stamina, and she was tiring at the finish. GOOD SECOND; PRICE. Fiee Advice, who was one of the outsiders of the field in the Selwyn Handicap was a tntle tlow- to begin, but she finished with a fine burst of speed iv second place behind Red Shadow. She has been racing very consistently of late over all distances. ANOTHER SMART EFFORT. Lily Bintjen registered another smart performance to win the Telegraph Handicap, giving her the great" record of four wins and a second in six starts within a month. She has made wouderful improvement lately M one stage her owner despaired of doing any good with her and the mare was thrown out of commission Aow in her ninth year, she is one of the l°? e Ctt S, S P"/* 0"I',1', WIM .v°y«6e showed a letuin to form by running second U one stage she gave indications of being a stayer, but she may always be at her best in sprint events. FESTIVAL THE FINAL. Kinal Handicap. Making a good beginning, she led practically all the way, ad ga\e the opposition no chance. She has Z'i ovcr., lon S ,cou«es, but she is best up to a mile and a quarter.
