During Saturday night a shallow depression in the South Tasman Sea deepened rapidly, and, becoming cyclonic in form, crossed Canterbury early. on Sundar morning; As the depression approached, winds. freshened from the North, reaching gale force in the Cook Strait region. A southerly change followed its passage, and this also was squally in many places, Canterbury experiencing a typical "burster." The cyclone passed rapidly eastwards"; and this morning a fresh depression of the westerly type was affecting the Dominion." :j{ain, though mainly in the form of scattered showers, lias been fairly widespread.
