Auckland's second innings opened at 11.30 with Mills and Postles. . The bowlers were Dunning and Badcoek. Badcoek bowled leg theory to Postles, and it was twenty minutes before the batsman got a start. Mills was more successful. Smith and then MoJoney -were-put on at the Terrace end. Badcoek was keeping a great length, and in 45 minutes only five runs were scored off him. In the first hour the batsmen scored only 47, and treated the bowling with the greatest respect. Coupland came on, and' in his second over Postles was missed at the wicket. The .bajl rose sharply. Hawkesworth appealed, but did not hold the ball, which sped on to the line. At lunch Auckland had scored 82 without loss (Mills not out 52, Postles not out During the adjournment the umpires announced that five leg byes had been signalled in error, with the result that Postlo's score was increased to 28. Badeock and Dunning, took up the attack on resumption. Postles placed the former neatly to fine leg for three. Mills played forward at the next ball and edged it to Elmes at first slip. Mills had played restraiuedly, but gave no chance. Weir came in and'Molonoy was put on again at the Terrace end. One hundred up after 110 minutes, -fu Badcock's next over Postles was clean bowled. 103—2—41.
