THE WAIRARAPA CUP

ARROW LAD'S FINE WIN

FIELD SLIPPED AGAIN

In the Wairarapa Cup, tho main event at the Wairarapa Racing Club's Summer Meeting yesterday, Arrow Lad, with nearly a stone more on his back, repeated his Manawatu Cup performance, the one difference being thjjt he did not slip .his field, quite so soon. Much of tho credit : for. the win must be given to his pilot, S. Anderson, who is riding in great form . at present. Anderson delayed his point of departure from- the opposition on this ; occasion to a much later point thati he did at Awapuni, and in this way kept the other riders well puzzled as to his inten- . tiona. He succeeded in making the race ' a sprint for his mount, even though the parly pace was by no means as slow as it- was in the Manawatu Cup. Arrow Lad is proving a great stakewinner at present for Mr. E. W. Collins. Formerly his main efforts were over shorter distances, but now his forte appears to be the Cup journeys. It is not : easy, however, after his fine performance yesterday, to' understand wholly why he did not race better pn the second day at Awapuni, for the time then was a full . second slower than yesterday's on quite as fast, a track. It could hardly have been the weight that checked him, as he has now.proved that he-can master the big poundages. ■ -'• - ■ ■ In yesterday's race Actaeon, The Sun, Spearful, Spear Lad, and Arrow Lad settled down in that order, but the. : last-named improved, after, turning out • of. the straight and followed Actaeon $nd The Sun. into the; back about three lengths • behind- them. Approaching the nve furlongs Anderson decided that his . time had come to move, and he scut , Arrow Lad to the front with a short run. The -riders on Spear Lad and ; bpearful saw what was happening and i drove their-, mounts along after the , leader, who, however, was still well clear . at tho. straight entrance. Spearful then challenged strongly, but the post was too close, ..and Arrow Lad continued on to win -Comfortably by a length. Another length back came. Spear ■ Lad, then at agap c£ three lengths was the fourth horse, Shrewd, with Ball Dress. Actaeon, and Stanchion nearest of 'the rest. Spearful "was 'favourite, amf'went a fine' .. r?ce.'. bufc #?.? early paeo_was hardly . fast ■| enouglTfo suit him." Ho was'closing oil the winner at the end,,. It was surprising ; to see ; Autopay's . being made ' v good .second .choice, but tho horse-simply r«- , fused to' gallop at any part'and was last '-. most of the way. Spear Lad was always ■; going generously, and is evidently on tile . upgrade again. Shrewd was kept too far : back early. Ball Dress should improve with the race.
