LEAGUE CRICKET
WELLINGTON V. WANGANUI
The' Wellington Mercantile Cricket League and a representative Wanganui team commenced a two-day match at Kelburn yesterday. Wellington,' who had first use of the wicket, had registered 236 runs when stumps were drawn last night, and when their innings closed this morning their total had been increased to 292. Wanganui commenced their innings cautiously, but soon opened out,'and at the luncheon adjournment had lost eight wickets for 208.
Yesterday's play was- held up for some tiino owing to rain, and in the afternoon a start was not made^ until 3 0 'clock. Roberts and Tilyard^ who opened for Wellington, faced the bowling of: Spurdle and C. ■ Smith. Roberts had just reached double figures-when ho was beaten by one of Spurdle's deliveries. Waugh then partnered Tilyard, and the pair carried the score to 48, when tho latter batsmen was clean bowled by Smith. ' Play was then post: poned owing to rain. .'-.'!
On the resumption in the afternoon
Melville partnered. Waugh, but aid not last long. When Murphy joined Waugh, however, Wellington's position improved rapidly, and when Morgan caught Waugh their total had reached .158. A further 48 runs were added by Whinham and Murphy, and when stumps were drawn Wellington were eight down for 236.
When play was resumed at 9.30 a.m. to-day Brooks started confidently and soon reached double figures. In attempting a leg stroke, however, he was smartly caught by Spurdle off Evans. The next man, Hassell, commenced to attack tho bowling, but when he had reached 20 he was caught by Morgan off Evans.
Wanganui's innings was opened by Gregory and Morgan. When they had put up 21 Morgan was snapped up in the slips by Roberts off Brooks. Trask joined Gregory, and after a short stay returned a ball to tho bowler, Brooks. When Evans was dismissed without breaking his "duck" Brooks had taken three wickets for 11 runs. Burton joined Gregory, and thb rate of scoring livened up, but steadied down again after Burton. had played a ball from Whinham on to the wickets. The bails remained in place, however, and the partnership continued until Gregory misjudged one of Dobbs's deliveries. Burton continued, to bat steadily when he was joined by Thrush, but was run out when his score had reached 29. Thrush, who made the highest score of the morning, was finally stumped by Windsor.
