United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. (Eeceived 2nd January, 9 a.m.) MELBOUBNE, This Day. Mr. W. Angliss, the head of a large meat exporting firm, announces that owing to the low prices overseas his firm is unable profitably to carry on its. export trade, and its operations are ceasing for the time being.The firm's action renders idle 2000 men in Victoria, New South Wales, and Queensland. Mr. Angliss pointed out that in London the prices for mutton were only half those ruling locally while the beef prices were 25 per cent..lower. The only hope for the future was the adoption of a reciprocal preference arising out of the forthcoming Ottawa Conference> and he was pinning'his faith to this conference^
During the year 1928-29 Australia exported over 189,000,000 carcasses cf frozen beef, valued at £2,750,000 and nearly 85,000,000 carcasses of frozen mutton and lamb, valued at £2,165,000. . ./..
