; British journalist sustained a severe loss in June, 1929/; when Prestwich Scott, haying reached; the great age of 83, resigned his position as editor and governing director of "The Manchester Guardian." Ec was one of the greatest editors Britain has known., There was no man in,journalism more highly, respected and "esteemed, by all classes. When his retirement was announced, he received a special message from the King. ; Mr. Scott, after a distinguished scholastic career. at Oxford,1 where he1 gained his M.A. degree with honours in classics, became editor of the "Manchester Guardian" in 1872, and occupied that post continuously for 57 years. ■ The Manchester journal was not well known in 1872; but -to-day, thanks to, Mr. Scott's editorship, it-Js in the front rank of the Empire's! newspapers. He drew to his office some of the most notable" journalists and 'distinctive" stylists in-England; and.the "Guardian," by its high literary standardi its incomparable . service of foreign news, and its authoritative pronouncements upon national affairs, became widely known far beyond the borders of Manchester. It is now one of the most widely quoted British journals. Mr. Scott sat for many years in the House of Commons, and public honours and scholastic distinctions were heaped upon him. He was a man of simple thought and habits. Although wealthy —he was one of the owners, of the "Manchester Guardian"—he scorned carriages until very recent times, and usually was to be seen riding a bicycle to and from his office. He wag succeeded in the editorship by his son, Mr. E. T. Scott.
