V.M.C.A HOSTEL FUNCTION

At "I)onbank," the V.M.C.A. Hostel for young men, a Christmas celebration ivas held last Wednesday to mark not only the lemrrence of the festive season, but also the doge of the all-round V.M.C.A. programme conducted by the resident!, during the year. The gathering took the form of a dinner party, presided over by Mr. N. W. Oliver (chairman, Activities Committee"), and several toasts were honoured, including "The V.M.0.A." proposed by Mr, A. F, Naylor, and responded to by Mr. W. H. Hindle (vice president)) and Mr. Len J. Greenberg (general secietary). Mr. W. M. Gumbley moved" a vote of thanks to the mation (Mrs. S. Young) and staff, iv appreciation of their ten-ires on behalf of the residents. Minerva, the goddess of wisdom, was also "toasted," in token of the fact that the majority "of-tJre-Donbfffifc residents had applied themselves to hard study during the year. A feature of the programme was a series of items of entertainment provided with, varying success by various groups of members, the sketch "Pious Paronelle," produced by Mr. A. F. Naylor receiving particular attention. ' Occasion was taken to present the interflat trophy, which is awarded annually to the section of Hie bouse gaining most points in an all-round contest embracing athletics (indoor and outdoor), tennis, ping-pong, basketball, and public speaking. On this occasion two flats tied with 12% points each ("Pirates" and "Yeates" sections), on whose behalf the cup was accepted by Messrs. D. A. Oldfield, and'H. W. Fry respectively, v The G. W. Olliver Cup, awarded to the member gaining most points for his flat, was also presented, having been won by Mr. R. C. Howatson, with Mr. R. Crawford, runner-up.'
