SUMMER FASHIONS

FROCKS AT ELLERSLIE

Owing to the weather not really appearing settled until the early afternoon, • the frocking at Ellerslie on Tuesday was not of such a fragile character as on Saturday, when, the filmiest and frailest of frocks were seen with hats of every variety, including bowlers, glengarries, tricornes, and Robin Hoods. Light and delicate materials gave way to textures of a heavier weave such as crepe do chines, heavy silks, even to light woollen frocks, and to ensembles, some attrac* tive instances of these showing them' selves (states tho '' New Zealand Herald"). Very little was to_ be seen of the long, sweeping dr.aperies that were so distinctive of'the previouß day, nor was there such brightness and variety of colouring. The lato arrivals had the advantage, as they were better able to judge of the weather and to dress accordingly. Printed crepe de chine, plain and figured Shantung, heavy chuddah silk, and soft satins were largely worn, and though simply made, wero well ou' and - attractive. In regard to colours, blue and. pink Shantung made charming suits; and were of much the

, samo shade as ,tho hydrangeas which were so lavishly used for decorutivo purposes on the. lawns, at tho baso of tho trees, and also in tho different stands. Red, beige, and mixed colours were also popular. If tho colours in the frocks were not so bright on this occasion the -flower-beds and the pohulukawus made up for it, tho crimson ilpwors of the latter lookiug magnificent among tho more- soberly-clad oaks, planes, ash,..-and; >yilio\y- trees.
