GENEROUS LIPTON
Liplon almost realised liis dream of winning the America Cup with Shamrock IV. The four-leaf clover boat won the first two races from Besolute. A fresh breeze was kicking up a choppy sea off Sandy Hook when the sloops came to the line for the third race. That Shamrock was built for fairly heavy weather. Resolute, a,"tender" sloop, was a witch in light airs but could not carry her top hamper in gusty going, says the "New York Outlook and Independent." The committee voted a, postponement, declaring that it was dangerous to risk men's lives iv frail racing machines. That argument caused Lipton to withdraw a contemplated protest. He knew Shamrock could probably stand the gaff—fishermen laughed at the so-calle-d "phoppy sea" —liiit he diil not choose to jeopardise American lives. Few people realise that. Sir Thomas Lipton passed up an almost sure victory; without a murmur.
