REMISSION OF TAX

RACING CLUB'S REQUEST

HARD HIT BY EARTHQUAKE

The Wairoa Eacing Club is petitioning the House of Eepresentatives seeking relief from the strained financial position it finds itiself in as a result of earthquake loss. It asks for the remission of the balance of taxation due, as well as accrued penalties.

The petition states that for five years the club has been directly responsible for the payment of £1470 per annum to the national purse. In the past year the club, throngh the misfortune of being located in the earthquake area, had suffered very severe damage and ioss. In spite of that loss, the club contributed £605 in taxation for the past year, and was still liable to pay a further £1000 for balance of taxation and penalties. If it was compelled to pay the balance owing, the club would go. into liquidation and out of existence, but if given relief from the tax burden it had reasonable prospects of being able to continue racing and contributing to the public revenue for many years to come. "It is respectfully submitted," the petition states, "that the public revenues would benefit more by remitting the £1000 now due and saving the club [rather than by drying up the source of racing revenuo in the Wairoa disttrict."
