fusion in the constituencies regarding the position of candidates who are both supporters of the National Governmont and political rivals for "the same seat. Tho Conservative leaders are making strenuous efforts to avoid . vote splitting by three-cornered contests where such situation -would mean Socialist victories, and efforts also are being made to help the Labour members who stood by Mr. Mac Donald. Sir John Simon's 25 National Liberals, it is stated, will not be opposed. The position of the other members of the Liberal Party remains obscure. There is little likelihood of the Conservative candidate withdrawing from Darwen, which Sir Herbert Samuel haa no intention of leaving. The date chosen by Mr. Mac Donald to open his personal campaign at Seaham—l2th October—is also his 65th birthday. Ho will stand for Seaham only. CANDIDATES IK FIELD. The Conservative headquarters is going full speed ahead, and the. party has 500 candidates at its disposal. According to tho "Daily Herald," the Labour Party will put 500 candidates in the field. A National Labour group has been formed, consisting of from 40 to 50, retiring members of the House of Commons and the candidates supporting Mr. Mac Donald. The group is opening an office and establishing an organisation for the benefit of its own Labour supporters. These will stand as National Labour candidates, claiming a measure of Conservative and Liberal, support. ■ It is estimated that if official Labour retains oven 200 seats and the Free Trade Liberals 25 out of the Liberal total of 58, then tho. majority for the National Government will be 165. Sir Oswald Mosley's new party's first list shows eighteen candidates, including the.boxer, Ted Lewis, who is standing for Whitechapel. !
