WAINUI-O-MATA SUBURB.
Tenders are being called for the construction of a road traffic tunnel through the hills between Petone and Wainui-o-mata. This tunnel, when completed, will open up a considerable area of land for residential purposes. A land development company, with headquarters in Wellington,. has : completed a town planning scheme and proposes to lay out and develop gradually a .model township at Wai-nui-o-mata. The tunnel will be just over half a mile in length, and will go straight through the hill on a grade of 1 in 15. In addition tea roadway wide enough for two-way : vehicular traffic, a raised footpath is to be provided for pedestrians. There are many interesting features in connection with the scheme, one of the most important being the probability of a new flat road to the Wairarapa. The development of the scheme, the company states, ■will give employment to a considerable of men for some years.
