NOTES AND COMMENTS

(BT "EANGATIRA"

RACING AT DUNEDIN

SECOND SPRING MEETING

PROSPECTS IN REVIEW

The fields for the Duncdin Jockey Club's Second Spring Meeting at Wingatui tomorrow are^ with two exceptions, of useful dimensions, and the racing should be interesting. The exceptions are the Wakari Hurdles and the Dunedin Guineas, for each of which only four horses have accepted. The poor response in these races is probably the result of the Spring Meetings being -split, thereby considerably reducing the usual Riccaiton patronage. The weather prospects are reported to be good, and the track should be in /satisfactory order. . The principal handicap is thu KANFUBLY HANDICAP, of 150 sots; one mile and a quarter.

The horse who will probably bo the public elect in the Ranfurly Handicap is Admiral Drake, and in view of the improvement that he has recently shown m his races he can be expected to give his supporters a good run for their money. The two who may .prove his most serious rivals are Black Duke and Latin Quarter. Red Racer is a lightweight prospect. A pair who are likely to show up are Admiral Drake and Red Racer. The three-year-old classic, is the DUNEDIN GUINEAS, of '400 soys; for thre,e-year-olda; one mile.

In the poor field that is down to contest the Dunedin Guineas a hot favourite is sure to be made of Cricket Bat. Hia most formidable opponent reads to be Gray's mount, Convoy. Performance points very decidedly to Cricket Bat. . Another important event is the youngsters' race, which is the

M'LEAJJ STAKES, of 200 sovst for two- '■■ year-olds. Four furlongs.

The M'Lean Stakes has drawn a large field of-untried two-year-olds, but only a few will be supported to any extent. Among the most likely, judged on what they have shown on the track, are probably Mr. J. M. Samson's pair, Molten (Paper Money—Lava) and Wealth (Paper Money— Skydr'eam), Vavemai, the elect of C. Emerson's trio (Oratorious, Lady Zephyr, and Skysong), and the Chokebore representative, Fleeting Glance. There will be followings for the Molten-Wealth bracket and Fleeting Glance. Horses who are likely to make creditable showings in the remaining races are:—Wakari Hurdles: Captain's Gift. Trial Stakes: Anne Shakespeare-Princess Argosy bracket and Bold Brigand. Kaikorai Handicap: Gallant Fox and Bachelor's Idol. Shorts Handicap: Bin Tin Tin and El Boa; Clarendon Handicap: Waiwene and Kerbside.
