THE BROADCASTING BILL

The Government may be , able shortly to take {mother, step in connection \yith the Broadcasting Bill. It is unfortunate that Bomp of the work so far done —the consideration and approval of the Bill by Cabinet—has had to be done.again, owing to the constitution pf a new Government; but there is no reason to 'suppose 'that the present Government can ,do otherwise than endorse [the principleoorfr the Bill. :It was

inevitable that the arising of such serious matters as have bad to be dealt with by Parliament recently should push broadcasting affairs into tho background, and we must make the best of things in spite of the delay. It was repeatedly urged, months ago, that the question should be expeditiously disposed of to allow ample time for a board to come into effective being, and .had that been done, tho board's working programme would no doubt have been sketched and its operations put in train by now. Tho need for the early passage of the Bill is all the 'more urgent now, and it is hoped by all who have the interests of New Zealand broadcasting at heart that the issue will soon be decided, and a board sippointcd. .
