KENNEL SHOW
JUDGE'S OPINION
The opinion that the dog fanciers in New Zealand would very soon have to import new blood to prevent a number of *tlie breeds deteriorating was expressed by Mr. J. V< 7- Marples, the noted English dog judge, who judged the forty-third annual show of the Wellington Kennel Club. ' ■ , Speaking to a "Post" representative, Mr. Marples said that, generally .speaking, the quality of . the dogs compared ■ favourably with that of the dogs lie had judged in Australia. The. best sections in the show were the smooth-haired fox-terriers and the gun dogs. In the latter section cocker spaniels and English and Irish setters were particularly good. "It is certainly a feather in the cap of the Wellington Kennel Club to have attained the record of 1362 entries, representing over -400 dogs," said Mr. Marples. "There is no doubt that it was the largest gathering oE canines, ever seen in New Zealand, and ■ needless to. say it taxed the officials somewhat. All the stewards worked with a wi11,.. and I think the show ran smoothly from start to finish. As is usual in gatherings such as this the brunt of the work falls on the shoulders of the secretary, in this ca.se Mrs.. Gadd, who I must say is one of the best secretaries it has ever been my privilege to come in contact with." Mr. Marples : said that the dogs were better than those he had judged at the Adelaide and Perth Shows, but not so good as those at the Royal Show in Melbourne. The'quality of the stock at the Sydney Show was also slightly better. AH the cash special prizes have been now awarded, and these are given in addition to those published yesterday:— .'■ Best English Better: Mr. T.
