Some interesting and rare coins were shown at a special meeting held by the New Zealand. Numismatic Society on Monday, at which the president, the Rev. D. C. Bates, occupied the chair. Roman gold, silver, and bronze coins which were in circulation at the dawn of the Christian era and until A.D. 180, were the subject of much interest, and a fine collection of early English silver coins in excellent condition was exhibited by Mr. Reilly. The Roman collection, which came from Germany, included coins of Tiberius Caesar, 14 A.D,, Claudius, 41 A.D., who was First Emperor of the Legions, Nero, Galba, Agrippina, Agrippa, and Augustus. Coins of all periods were dealt with. Medals exhibited included a medal commemorating the independence of America, the anti-slavery medal, and medals gtruck at the death of the Duke of Wellington (1769-1852) and Lord Nelson (1758-1805). At the next meeting, which will probably be held in December, the society is to be honoured by a visit from His Excellency the Governor-General, Lord Bledisloe, who has consented to read a paper 011 the archaeological discoveries on his estate in the Homeland.
The Wellington Homing Pigeon Society held a race-from Waiouru on Saturday, 20th September, the distance being 134 miles. . Good times were put up, the following taking the first eight places-— W. Thomas, 1, 2, and 3; C. Webster and Son, 4; Day aud Boyd, 5; C. Webster and Son, 6; Croskery and Son, 7; C. Webster aud Son, 8. The velocity of the first bird was 1840.5 feet per minute, and that of the.eighth 1520.4 feet per minute.
