CITY CORNER LIGHTS
LENS STANDARDS TRIED The report of the lloads Committee to tho Automobile Club last night stated that its chairman (Mr. I. V. Wilaon) and Mr. E. Palliser and the secretary (Mr. W. A. Sutherland) had visited the safety zones on Post Office Square with a view to obtaining improved lighting. They were accompanied by Mr. G. Lauchlan, of tho Electric Light Department, who stated that it is proposed to erect standards there with reflecting lenses. Those shown seemed satisfactory, but Mr. Lauchlan was going further into tho matter of design, a"d would again consult the secretary when tho matter was decided. They had inspected the lights at the Hotel Cecil, and the suggestion that a light on a post on the junction of Molesworth street and Lambton quay should bo moved to another xjolo was adopted. Mr. Lauchlnn agreed to have the concrete posts at the junctions of the Terrace with Woodward and Bouleott streets repainted. Tho chairman (Mr. E. A. Batt) said that Mr. Lauchlan had met the members of the club at their request, and in anticipation of their visit had had tho standard prepared for a demonstration. Mr. Lauchlan had suggested that similar standards should be erected at the corners of Boulcott street and Woodward street with the Terrace. If these proved satisfactory, the principle could be extended with advantage to many points in the city. There seemed to be a practice of putting'corner lights on the side of the street where tho least traffic passed. This made it hard to pick the corners up.
