SOCIAL RELIEF
AID TO HOSPITAL BOARDS ADDITIONAL FINANCE No time has been lost by the Minister of Health (the Hon. J. A. Young) in. tackling the problem facing metropolitan hospital boards, especially concerning the abnormal demands for social relief. Tho Hospital Boards Association recently represented to the Government the necessity for a free grant of £100,000, and since then a deputation, headed by the chairman of the executive, Mr. W. Wallace, of Auckland, went into .the question with Mr. Young. It was stated by the Minister.to-day that while he could give no indication as to the amount that would be forthcoming, an adequate amount would be made available by way of supplementary subsidy to boards which required assistance in order to cope with, the strain imposed in connection with the relief o? distress arising out of unemployment. The amount proposed to bo made available would be disclosed in the supplementary Budget to be presented to tho House to-night by the Minister of Finance (the Hon. W. Downie Stewart).
Since assuming office the Minister has given favourable consideration to the requests of hospital boards for permission to carry overdraft liabilities against prospective revenue to meet urgent demands, and quite a number of approvals have been given.
