CANADA'S ACTION
I WIPING OUT PREFERENCE OPPOSITION PROTEST OTTAWA, 4th October. Declaring that "the result is a startling increase in the tariff rate against goods from Great Britain," and_ that British preference had been practically "wiped out" on products of the class or kind made in Canada, Mr. Mackenzie King (Liberal), Leader of the Opposition, criticises the recent decrees of the Government. The first to which he objects fixes the rate of exchange in computing the values for duty on British imports at 486 2-3 cents to the pound.
The second decree is a special dumping duty on British imports of the kind or class made in Canada, purchased at less than 456 2-3 cents to the
pound. These changes, made by Order-in-Council, Mr. Mackenzio King asserts, "represent a greater variation in tho Canadian fiscal policy than ever adopted by any Canadian Government with tho consent of Parliament."
He predicts that they will aggravate tho difficulties of tho present situation in both Britain and Canada.
