OROUA ELECTORATE
REFORM CANDIDATE
RESIGNS
At a meeting of supporters of the Reform Party in the Oroua electorate at Feilding on Friday, the resignation of the Reform candidate for the seat, Mr. J. G. Eliott, was accepted with regret, and it was decided to place on record the league's appreciation of Mr. Eliott's past service as member for Oroua. The chairman, Mr. A. Campbell, said that the members of the league recognised that Mr. Elifftt had already thrown up, the offer of a good position on account of his duties to the party as the Reform nominee for Oroua, but with the seeming likelihood of the General Election being postponed through the coalition of the Reform and United Parties, Mr. Eliott had naturally required to avail himself of a second offer of a responsible position. Mr. Eliott had signified his intention of being available to the party if required, but in the meantime he had considered it to be the right thing to hand in his resignation, leaving both himself and the party a free hand. On the motion of Messrs. E. Goodbehere and R. Harper, the meeting then carried the following motion of endorsement of Mr. Coates's action in coalescing with the United Party in the interests, of the country:— "That this meeting of Reform supporters in the Oroua electorate heartily endorses the action of its leader, the Right Hon. J. G. Coates, in forming a temporary coalition with tho United Party. We recognise that the present crisis through which the country is passing is unprecedented and calls for an emergency arrangement for the purpose of re-establishing upon a sound basis the finances of the State and the economic life of the Dominion. We congratulate Mr; Coates on once again showing his readiness always to place the interests of the country in tho forefront of all other considerations/ including party interests."
