A HOUSING PLAN
(To the Editor.) , Sir,— Might I suggest a meani.of provid-i ing employment which .would' Move ot great benefit to the city, and incidentally to business generally. I refer T» a housing scheme. Wellington contain* innumerable old houses which Bre really at this date not fit for human habitation." ln« present low prices in building materials appears to make this an excellent" time for a little improvement of housing conditions. I suggest that the Government should find a way of having these old houses demolished and re-erected upon modern lines. If the money was-made available for this purpose, it could be let out at a reasonably low percentage, wnicn would be far better than tke present system of spending, with small ultimate benefit to anyone and no return m interest. Contracts could be let out to builders, and strict inspection insisted .upoa in_ regard to timber, design, and workmanship. This rebuilding would create work for many men, and also help the timber and hardware trades and busiuess generally. I suggest that the master buildere take the matter up and thus make an effort to create employment for the many unemployed in the trade.—l am, etc., PROGRESSIVE SCOT.
