THE TECHNICAL SIDE

Britain, as noted in an Official Wireless message on Saturday, now holds four speed records for aeroplanes, motor-cars, motor-cycles, and motor-boats. In conveying his congratulations on the establishment pf the latest air record, the King emphasised a point, that is frequently overlooked—the part played by the Royal Air Force organisation and the technical departments of the Air Ministry, and by the manufacturers and designers of the machine and engine. We hear much when such a contest as the Schneider Cup race is held of the skill and daring of'the pilots, and also of the achievement of aircraft designers. But behind these is a highly-efficient technical force, constantly at work onall the problems of engine construction and flight. How much aviation owes to the military force is known to fewr—for the Air Force does hot advertise; but one may be certain that were this Force to be abolished Britain would lose one of its most able and efficient research departments.
