H.M.S. DIOMEDE BEATEN
The Association football match between a team from H.M.S. Diomede and a Wellington eleven, played at the Stadium, reBulted in a win for Wellington by 5 goals to 2. The display of football was disappointing, and Wellington had little difficulty in winning. The teams were:— Navy.—Ellraan; Couchman, Cotton; May, Bradley, Burnett; Ehrell, Connor, Leonard, Haineß, Soott. Wellington.—Ell; Martin, Otter; J. M'Leod, Campbell, Cumiuings; Dunlop, Dunsmuir, Leslie, Cunningham, Craig. Referee: Mr. B. Davis. Wellington kicked off and attacked on the wing through Craig. Play swung down to the other end, and a centre from Scott almost t.ook Ell by surprise, lhe Navy forwards were seen in some combined work, but though Wellington were hard pressed, the defence held. Leonard sent in a hard shot—a "first-timer"—and Ell made a brilliant save. Good play on Wellington's right wing gave Leslie a chance, and the centre forward broke away in characteristic style. Ellman was equal to the occasion. After" another period ot even play Leslie broke away, and Ellman turned the kick for a second time. Wellington attacked,, and there w«!re some anxious moments'for the Navy before they cleared. Cunningham hit the upright, and Campbell sent a shot over the bar. Wellington's chance came at last. Leslie shot from close quarters, and when the goalie punched clear, Cunningham rushed in to net. Wellington 1, Navy 0. Scott worked down the. wing and centred beautifully. Ell had to punch three times before he put the ball: behind. Wellington had .an advantage for a considerable period. Ellman. saved a shot from" Leslie, but was completely beaten by a hard, long drive from Craig. Wellington 2, Navy 0. It was not long before Wellington scored again. Dunlop centred,, and Cunningham finished the movement. Wellington 3, Navy 0. Half-time was called shortly afterwards. Wellington scored immediately on the resumption of play. Dunlop took the leather up the wing, and scored. Wellington 4, Navy 0. Wellington continued to hold the upper hand* and for a great part of the time the leather was kept in the Navy's half. A Navy attack saw Haines bring Ell to his knees, and Scott sent in a hard drive close over the bar. The Navy broke away two or three times, and in one of these Ellwell netted, scoring from close quarters. 4-1. The Navy goalkeeper sived twice from Leslie's feet, and play then swung to Wellington's goal. The Navy forwards opened up the game, and Leonard scored. 4-1 Within a few minutes Wellington scored, Leslie netting from a distance . 5-2. There was no further score.
