AUSTRALIA PREFERRED
NEW ZEALAND TRAINERS
{.From "Vedette.") SYDNEY* Ist October. New Zealand trainers in Sydney at present aro all rather indefinite about their future movements. Much depends, of course, on their fortunes at the A.J.O. Meeting, but there are other considerations. Chief of these is the peculiar position of the -exchange, which reduces considerably any winnings in Australia should the owners of moneywish to transfer it to New Zealand.. . If it were left- to the trainers it is certain that most of them would prefer to remain in Australia. -Stakes in New Zealand have shrunk to such a degree' that, even suburban meetings in Sydney aro quite as attractive. The betting, too, is still quite big enough for tho average New Zealander. Trainers point out that while stakes have dropped in the' pominionj there has been no corresponding reduction in' the ,cost of racing. Travelling expenses hardly exist here in comparison to their home country, Where' at timeshundreds of miles have to be. covered. It is noticed that J. T. Jamiesqn, H. Lorigan, and A. D. Webster have nominated for the Melbourne Spring Meetings. Time was when they would have hurried back for the Spring Meeting at Kiccarton, but that plan does not nowiappeal. >One, trainer, is ,ur,gihg, his owners to stay on until after this-Christ-mas Meetings -at- Kandwick. There is" a good deal to support his claims..now ;that the .horses are here; for there' are some good meetings between now and the midsummer holidays.
