PUZZLING DELAY
HINT OF TURKISH RED TAPE
TRIBUTES TO SMITH
(Received 3rd October, 9 a.m.)
LONDON, 2nd October. The absence of further news of ford Smith ia puzzling, but it is pointed out that Smyrna is a forbidden area for aircraft and warships, and Milas may be considered sufficiently close to give the Turkish authorities the excuse for using sufficient red tape to delay him for perhaps two days. It is now impossible'to break Mollison's record. '
Smith's flight has commanded great public interest. The newspapers in England sympathise with the bad luck of a man whom they describe as not merely a supreme pilot but a national figure, whoso greatness and personal charm is acknowledged all over the world.
His delayed arrival has disorganised the reception arrangements at Croydon.
