PETONE RATES
(To the Editor.) Sir,—ln your report of the meeting held by the Eastern Pctone ratepayers on Thursday night, it would appear as i£ the ratepayers worn satisfied with the rates levied by the Pctouc Borough Council. ■ ■ This is not so, as the feeling of the mooting was most emphatic that the rates were altogether too high. Your report on the whole is correct, but I would like to j stress the fact that the ratepayers are not at all satisfied with the amount of money that is being asked for. This dissatisfaction is not only on account of the rates levied on the ratepayers in the catitcrn area of Petone, which this year have increased iv many cases by 50 per cent., and 'in some instances considerably more, but it is considered that the rates on the whole borough call for considerable reduction,—l am, etc., \V. P. WATKINSON. President, Ewtern Petone Ratepayers! Association. "Judge Not" does not agree with, a statement reported recently that "some of the single men did not want to work." "I know o£ a lot of uhigle men who pay the tax aiK? go day after dey looking for work, and cannot get any. A ■number of them are returned soldiers. Surely something could be done for them to relieve the mental state of mind of these men, as I know some have been out for months."
