CLUB OPENINGS
AT SEATOUN
The; Seatoun Bowling Clubj's season was officially opened this afternoon by Mr. 11. Mayer, vice-president of tho New Zoaland Bow-ling Council, but owing to heavy rain yesterday no pl^y was possible; the* green and surroundings were,. however, otherwise in very attractive condition.'; Representatives and their ladies we're < present from the Lyall Bay Wellington, Woburn, Kelburn, Ne.wtown, Victoria, Island Buy, and Blenheim Clubs. Tho guests wero welcomed by Mr. W. L. Page, president of the club, and Mrs. Page. Mr. Mayer, in declaring the season open, said that although it was regrettable that no play was possible today,, there were other things in connection with bowling clubs as well as the playing side. The social side formed a very important branch of any club s activities, and he considered that 7j per cent, of the success of any club or organisation was due to tho fostering of the social spirit among members. This was more apparent possibly at the present time, taking into consideration that many bowlers were in the unfortunate position of feeling the economic depression, wherein they might be debarred fcom taking pars in the game. He felt ttiat it was' the duty of members of all clubs to do their utmost to see that these men wero not lost to the game. They could in some material way assist members financially without making it appear as charity. There could be no doubt that; if they kept them in the game it would be a source of pleasure to one and all. The Seatoun Club, he said, was most fortunate in possessing so many able men on its directorate, and who had been tho means of placing the club on such a sound footing, both from the social and playing points of view. He also took the opportunity of congratulating Mr. Page on being elected for the second year as president of the club.
