FEW GOOD BAGS

ANGLING SEASON OPENS

DULL AND WINDY WEATHER

j, Few good bags were- taken on the first of the angling season, which opened yesterday. The Hutt River was rather high and almost clear, a bad combination, suiting hoitlier fly nor minnow, and it blew gustily from the. west, with a downstream slant which made casting unpleasant. Even creeper, in those portions of the river open, to itsuse, failed to'fill baskets. Tho condition of the tributaries varied according to the local rainfall. The best basket recorded so far is that of Mr. A. J. Nimmo, who chose the" only stream with the wind behind him, the Pukeratahi. It was very low for the opening of the season, but lie saw plenty of small fish. Starting, at 6.30 a.m. he had only two fish at 2 p.m., but after a late lunch found the trout rising very freely,, and managed to take tho limit of twenty, on the Purple March Brown and Bed Tipped Governor* The largest fish was 2Jlb, four of the others\an about 21b, but the bulk were smaller, and he had to put back a number of small ones.. .

Messrs. J. Nieholl, R. H. Niramo, and party took ten fish in the Whakataki, Mr.- Nimmo landing a fiye-pounder. ' One bag of fourteen was taken in the Porirua, the heaviest fish weighing lib, /but there is news of a two-pourider taken near the moutfh of this stream by a. beginner. Mr. S. T. Tisdall and party took ten nice fish in the Wainui.

A four-pouiider wa3 caught near the Pipe Bridge on the bully, but bo far nothing has been heard of other goodsized fish from the Hutt, though most of the persevering anglers there went home with -one or two fish. The opening being on a week day, none of the rivers was crowded, though amongst the fishermen wero some who were in the unfortunate position-of having no work to go to. Given fine weather for the week-end, or rivers coloured enough for the minnow; some encouraging results should be heard of, as those who have watched the evening, lise prior to the opening of the season say that there arc plenty of trout. Most of the trout caught so far have been in poor condition, as is usual early in the season. ...... :
