GOVERNMENT'S ATTITUDE
STATEMENT PROMISED
The entry of the Matson Line into the Pacific service was referred to in the House of Representatives to-day by Mr. P. Eraser (Labour, Wellington Central).
Mr. Fraser asked the Prime Minister I (1) Whether the Government had come jto any decision in respect of the many ! representations made concerning the threat to New Zealand shipping and the livelihood of New Zealand seamen involved in the proposed entry of the heavily subsidised and protected United States Matson Shipping Company into the inter-colonial trade. (2) Whether, if the Government had arrived- at a decision on this matter, the Prime Minister would state what steps were proposed to bo taken to assist New Zealand Bbipping and seamen against the aforesaid unfair competition. Mr. Forbes replied that owing to the pressure of special business and the events which had taken place, Cabinet had not yet considered the matter, but ho expected to be able to mako-a statement in a few days' time.
