LOST IN 1916
SERVICE RIFLE FOUND
Issued by the Defence Department in 1016, a Service rifle was lost until it was located by the police about a month ago in the possession of Leonard H. Humphreys. Humphreys, Lloyd Anderson, and Walter R. Brooke appeared before Mr. E. Page, S.M., to-day on charges of obtaining the rifle without a permit. Sub-Inspector Ward said that as far as could be ascertained Brooke had obtained the rifle last March as security for a 6hotgun. About a month later he loaned it to Anderson, who, in turn, had loaned it to Humphreys to _go pig-shooting with. The police were quite satisfied with the explanations given by the defendants, but they had been unable to trace who had had the rifle since it had left the control of the Defence Department. .None of the defendants had a licence to hold the rifle.
Mr. W. Perry, who appeared for the defendants, said they had not known that it was necessary, to get a permit when they wished to borrow a firearm.
The Magistrate fined each of the defend ants £1, and. ordered the rifle to be forfeited, '
