A VETERAN BUGLER
Mr. John Henry "Walker, ■ypho died ©n sth September at Greytown at the age of 87, was a veteran o£ the Maori Wars. He came to New Zealand as ;a boy, and served as a bugler in one of
the British Begiments Btationed in j this country. He fought in the Taranaki war under Colonel Yon Tempsky, Captain Buck, and Lieutenant Hastings. During the wai' he distinguished himself on two particular occasions. In the first, Captain Buck was shot, and he rescued the body from the Maoris. In the second, he performed a similar act when Lieutenant Hastings was shot. On. both of these occasions he was hit on the back of Ms head 'with the butt of a rifle hpld by a Maori, who left Bum for dead, but fortunately a mate came to his rescue, and took him to safety. The.late Mr. Walker received the New Zealand Medal. He married Miss Irene Alice Oakfold, of England, who predeceased him in 1920. The late Mr. Walker left two sons and six daughters—Mr. James H. Walker (Gisborne), Mr. G. E. W. Walker (Palmerston Nprth), Mrs. Annie E. Ward (Palmerston North), Mrs. Sarah ;J. Allen (Pahiatua), Mrs. Florence A. Kennedy (Wellington), Mrs. Charlotte W. King (Waihi), Mrs. Alice E. Gassori (Tanranga), and Mrs. , May. E. S. Edwards (Wellington). . There are also 38 grandchildren and 11 great-grand-children.
