STAINFORTH'S RECORD

OVER 400 MILES AN HOUR

FASTEST FLIGHT YET

(British Official Wireless.) KUGBY, 29th September. At Calshot this evening, FlightLieutenant Stainfortli, in a Vickcra Supermarine seaplane—SOß—fitted with a specially-tuned "sprint" Bolls Boyce eugine, designed to develop 2600 horsepower, attempted to lower his own world speed record of 379 miles an hour. Some hours elapsed before the results of the attempts were revealed on the films by which the speed is recorded. It was then announced that Stainforth 's speed was 408.8 miles an hour. His fastest laps were .415.2, 405.1, 409.5, and 405.4 miles an hour. Flight-Lieutenant Stainfortli has, long been awaiting weather conditions which would permit of a test flight; . The new'engine was installed^n. the Supermarine machine which FlightLieiitqnant Bopthman used for the Schneider record, and a suitable' air screw was fitted. , .
