DAGGERS DRAWN

AMERICAN QUARREL

War is. impossible between "two of the United States of America, so this country is able to watch with amused detachment the development of a dramatic dispute between Oklahoma and Texas, says the New York corrospondent of the "Daily Mail." A few days ago "Alfalfa Bill" Mur ray,' tho tobacco-chewing Governor of Oklahoma, ordered his workmen to cross into Texas over a new bridge spanning the Bed River and destroy barriers erected by the command of Governor Sterling of Texas. The Governor of Texas then dispatched a'troop of the celebrated Texas Bangers to guard their side of- the bridge and block all traffic, into their State. The' two Governors indulged in a furious exchange of diplomatic dis patches, in one of which "Alfalfa Bill," who is a Scotsman married to an Indian woman, declared that "all thn Bangers can do is to cuss and roll dice." Now the Hangers have replied by demonstrating their superb marksmanship. Banger Goss, firing his pistol upside down, split a playing-card at twenty yards' range, and Captain Tom Hiekman aiming from the hip, hit 18 matches out of 20 at a distance of 50 feet. ' . A toll bridge belonging to a private company is the cause of the quarrel. The company secured in the Federal Courts an injunction against the Governor of -Texas forbidding him to per^ mit t.ra.ffio over the new bridge until compensation was* paid, to the company.
