SUCCESSFUL EVENING

An exceptionally large gathering was entertained at the last meeting of the Cercle Francais with ah admirable presentation of scenes from "Lo Barbie Sevelle' \ (Beaumarchais). The play, which was under the direction of Misses P.. and C. Smythson, was bright and vigorous throughout, and the audience appreciative. Spenery and delightful costumos contributed to the success of this production. Mme. T. R. Herd played with effect the title role of "Figaro," the Barber of Seville, who helped the gallant "Comte d/Almaviva" (Miss Allison Mackay) to communicate. with "Rosino" (Miss Coralie Smythson), who was jealously guarded by "Bartholo" (Miss Smythson). Miss Tewsley was most amusing as "Don Bazile," Rosine's singingmaster, and &fone. P« Finlayson ,tbok tho part of the notary. . The musical side of the programme was-supplied by Miss Hirst. During the evening Mr. F. F. Miles (president), on behalf, of tho club, expressed regrets that the club's secretary, Miss Birnie, was loavingshortly for Palmerston North. Miss Huntington- and. Miss Birnie received tho. members of the club.and guests.
