Elephants cannot jump, and their maximum stride is 6ft, 6in.- Therefore, if pursued by an elephant, one should jump a ditch 7ft or more wide. Then one is safe until the elephant finds a bridge. In shooting an. elephant it is necessary to hit just the right spot, because the skull is strong enough to resist a'bullet. Since the eye sockets and the other openings are differently situated in African and Indian elephants, it is necessary to practice on both varieties. Even then one is not safe if one should meet a mongrel.
