(From Our Own Corrwpondent.) NELSON, 30th September. The death occurred suddenly at Biehmond last evening o£ Mr. Herbert Newport, aged 48 years. Mr. Newport worked on his grocery round as usual yesterday, but complained of pains in the chest during the afternoon. In the evening he collapsed and died. Mr. Newport was a member of the Borough Council for six years up to his death. Ho took an active part in the affairs ol the Baptist Church, was a bowler, and ex-president of tho Richmond Club. Tho .Nelson City .Cricket' Association last evening discussed the time taken in recent years to play out Newman Shield matches. It .was decided that tho association wag in favour of a threo-day lime limit for such matches, and the delegato on the Newman Shield^ Committee was iustructed to move in the mattor at tho' next meeting of that committee It was decided also that tlio Nelson Association was in, favour of a two-day limit' for "X" Cup matches. Tho meeting passed a motion of sympathy to the family of tho late Dr. 11. Jeffrey, a vice-prosident of tho association, members., standing as a mark of respect. Officers were' elected as follows:—Patron, Mr. F. H. Richmond; president, Mr. A. Bobinson; vice-presidents, Messrs.,C. Haggitt, A. W. Claydon, J. Wigzell, W. B. Griffin, A. W. Fitzgibbon,' H. Neale, C. H. Broad, Hon. W. W. Sno.dgrass, P. H. Kitchingman, Dr. Bose-Innes, F. Hobem, E. M. Jackson, B. T. Day, and Dr. H. £. A. Wushbourn; ,hon. secretary and treasurer, Mr, A. Carpenter; fixtures committee, Messrs. J. Newman (senior), O. J. Mullins (junior); selectors, Mr. T. B. Louisson (senior), Mr. J. Koss (junior); delegates to District Association, Messrs. T. A. Scarell, O. J. Mullins, E. E. Neale, J. Newman, C. Kinzett, and B. Sanders; executive committee, all club delegates; emergency committee, Messrs. T. B. Louissou, E. B. Neale, and tho secretary; classification committee, the executive; Newman Shield delegate, Mr. E. E. Neale. It was decided to retain the system of championship points scoring—6 for an outright win, 4 for a first inning's win, and 1 for a first inning's loss. Mr. E. L. Bonsemann, manager of the Waimea Co-operativo Dairy Co., Ltd., has received advieo to tho effect that ho has secured second placo for tha moat improved grading factory in the Dominion for tho past season, for factories grading under 95 points. Mattai Bank residents 'report that they havo heard the shining cuckoo in that locality ■■ainco- last Wednesday morning. .... . . • Miss Aeheson (holder) had no difficulty in retaining the Nelson ladies' golf championship when she mot Mrs. M'Morland in the 'final. Miss Acheson will-participate in the New; Zealand championship tournament in Wellington next month. Mrs..Bout, who won the junior championship-by defeating Mrs. Webb, 1 iip at the nineteenth, scored her second win in tho event. She also won the Encounter. Shield this season.
