MARANUI SURF CLUB

SUCCESSFUL SEASON

:; A feature of the annual ■ report \of the Maranui Surf and LiffrSaving Club, to be pifesented at- the meeting to-rabrrow even- j ing, is the paragraph dealing with ihe rescues carried out by members of the club, assisted by the beach custodian. On three occasions during February swimmers, who had got into difficulties were brought ashore, and when, the . steamer Progress was wrecked at Ohiro Bay on Ist May; Mr. I. M'Hardy, a member of the club, made a gallant but unsuccessful effort to rescue some of the seamen who had been swept off the rocks. ~ "'" "", The report states that the club has come through a most strenuous : year' with a. creditable showing,' meetingl with considerable success in' competitive' swimming; The new clubhouse has been in constant use for training arid social activities and members have greatly appreciated the increased comfort and training facilities. At the . New Zealand championships at Wanganui the club's .A and B teams gained second and third places respectively in the Nelson Shield competition and the William Henry: Memorial Trophy was regained. In.inter-club competitions the Maranui teams won four cups and two shields and, members also performed with gratifying success in , inter-club swimming events, C. E. Claridge winning all the freestyle championship events. Twenty-five social functions were held, every one of which was a financial success. Considering the depression, the club's finances are regarded as satisfactory, and although the balance owing on the clubhouse is considerable it ia hoped with the whole-hearted support of- members to reduce the amount appreciably during the coming season. The report expresses gratification at the fact that Mr. F. Chapman, a life member and for many years secretary of the club and the Royal Life Saving Society, has been awarded the Distinguished 'Service Medal of the Society. ' ■ .
