ECONOMIC COMMITTEE
"MISLEADING STATEMENTS"
OBJECTION RAISED
The Prime Minister (the Right Hon. G. W. Forbes) made the following statement to-day regarding the operations of the Special Economic Committee which is now, inquiring into financial and allied matters arising out of the present economic depression:— "The Special Economic Committee is still in the process of taking evidence from representatives of various bodies and individuals, and has not, so far, commenced its deliberations ou any single point raised by witnesses or included in any questionnaire sent out by the Secretariat for the purpose of obtaining direct information. A questionnaire in no way reflects tho mind or views of the Committee. "No responsibility can therefore be taken by the Commitee for the premature statements or inferences which have appeared in some of the newspapers, and, as such statements or inferences are grossly misleading and likely to create a feeling of insecurity, if not alarm, in the minds of many people, the Committee takes this opportunity of publicly announcing that nothing has yot transpired which would justify anyone in drawing conclusions, as has been the ease. "The matters before the Committee cover a very wide field, and the evidence taken is of a very conflicting nature. It is therefore impossible at this stage to give even a remote indication of what remedial measures will eventually be agreed upon for the purpose of making recommendations to Pai'liament."
